It is still the same old watermelon. We ate, made drinks and floats with the flesh and then made pickle with the rind and now a warm sweet drink with the rind. Nothing to throw away so no cause to complain.

Watermelon rind with skin
Rock sugar according to taste
Method:

Put watermelon rind in a big pot and enough water to cover the rinds.
Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for at least 1 hour.
Remove and discard rind.
Add rock sugar according to your taste. Stir until the rock sugar dissolve.

if you cook the drink for a longer period, then it will not be so cooling.
Do you give your kid the watermelon flesh? if so, then this drink should be ok

On Hawaii we pickle watermelon rind like in kim chee and Cantonese style sweet and sour pickle too.
I use it in salad and in dishes like sweet & sour fish or pork.

yeah the eldest is now 21 months and the younger sis is now 13 months. . .premature girl exactly 28 weeks.
I do give him watermelon . . .in that case will also feed him some of the drink. . thanx

How is little sister doing? My elder girl was also prematured and now she has caught up - the doctor said that she will catch up as she grew older and she did.
