Kampong Johnson's Rendang


In 1966, October, President Johnson visited Malaysia and he visited this Kampong in Negeri Sembilan which changed it's name to Kampong Johnson in honor of his visit. A feast was cooked by the Kampong Folks and the most memorable dish was the Rendang with Jackfruit. Negeri Sembilan's rendang differs from the other states of Malaysia as it is cooked with Green Thai bird chillies instead of red dried chillies and aromatics like ginger, galangal, fresh tumeric, fresh tumeric leaves, lemon grass and kaffir lime leaves . It has no spices.


As the hot topic these days is the President, it makes me think of this dish which was so delectable and although i do not have all the aromatics but do have a packet of instant rendang mix which was not quite the same but did bring back fond memories of President Johnson's visit that day.

Ingredients:
500 - 600 gm beef - cut into 1/2 inch slices
1 can Jackfruit - drained
1 packet ChanHong Instant Rendang Mix(available online here http://mytasteofasia.com/)
1 400 ml can of coconut milk (70% saturated fat)
1 stalk lemon grass - crushed (optional)
4 - 5 kaffir lime leaves(optional)
2 tbsp kerisik
3 tbsp cooking oil

Method:
Using the pressure cooker, heat cooking oil and add in the contents of the packet of ChanHong Instant Rendang Mix and saute until fragrant.
Add in beef slices, lemon grass and coconut milk.
Add enough water to cover the beef.
Close the pressure cooker and cook on high for 10 - 15 minutes depending on the type and quality of beef used.
Release pressure and open the lid, add in kaffir lime leaves and kerisik and cook until sauce is thickened.
Add in the jackfruit and cook until it is cooked through.
Add salt to adjust taste.
Rendang is ready to be eaten.

Hi Lily, noticed your callsign at Jane's blog and kaypoh over.
Holy Smoke! Seeing your pic of Johnson rendang sure makes me drool.
And seeing the dishes you cook, you sure one heck of a gourmet cook!
Wow, you the kind of lady any man would love to bring home show his mother, ha ha.
When I was in my buaya, bachelor days back in Malaysia with girlfriends almost every State due to my work travels, a SYT (sweet young thing) ahemm, got attracted to me.
And she did not play fair! She knew I had lots of SYT friends, but not knowing to cook well, as well not a Nonya, she got her Malay and Nonya friends to give her a crash course on cooking.
She discreetly learned of my favourite dishes, and one evening invited me home for dinner. (She was the only SYT who invited me home for dinner, she cooked).
She had made Nonya style sambal belachan, hum choy pai kuat tong, steamed garupa, ayam tempra, and pineapple udang lemak.
And for dessert, she made sugee cake.
The rest is history! I lost my Bachelor's degree, she won her Masters. ha ha. And the bonus for me? She was, still is a gorgeous lady! And her Nonya cooking can be mistaken she a Nonya lady, ha ha.
But I made a wrong move too, sent her a bouquet of 12 red roses, but only 11 was real, and one a fake silk rose, and on the card I wrote, "I will love you till the last one dies".
Game over for me, ha ha.
But I did it my way, regrets I have but too few to mention.

Wah...so sedap! Is the ChanHong Instant Rendang Mix as fantastic as the real thing? Tried once (another brand) and DH was not too keen.

most of the ready mix is ok but you would have to tweak it to your family's taste or expectation.

of course, the real thing is so much better and you can get all the ingredients.

yes, all the ingredients are from here in the usa.
