Fish in Soya Sauce
Although i am happy that i get to see my siblings, relatives especially cousins who i seldom see when i was staying in Malaysia, and friends but it is so sad to see my mom, who is 84 and not well. She is in the hospital with tubes and drips, all attached to her and i know she is in good care. My mom has gone through alot bringing up 7 children and she has never requested or demanded anything from her children. Even now, in this situation, she will try to visit the restroom without asking for help. When we were young, mom had to feed us with limited resources and frying fish and just sprinkling on soya sauce was the staple.
Ingredients:
Fish - cleaned and rub with salt
Oil for shallow frying
Soya sauce
Method:
Heat wok/skillet (if it is teflon coated - do not heat), add oil and when oil is shimmering, slowly lower fish into oil. Fry until brown before flipping over to brown the other side. If fish should resist to dislodge, sprinkle a little salt oil into the oil and this will help. Fish getting stuck is due to putting in the fry before the oil is hot enough. Use medium heat to fry fish if the fish is big and thick.
When fish is browned on both sides, remove to serving plate and sprinkle a tablespoon or two of soya sauce.
Serve warm or room temperature with white rice.

I totally relate to your feelings regarding your Mom. Please bear in mind life must go on and move towards the brighter side. I wish the best for You and your Mom. Soy sauce is one of my favorite dipping sauce for fried fish with lemon or lime juice or the one back home in the Philippines the Kalamansi or Kalamondin which are now readily available at selected Asian stores here.
Lily, I hope your mom will be well soon. It is always nice to be back home seeing our love ones.
Hi Lily, sorry to hear about your mom hope she'll get better soon and I'll keep her in my prayer. But it is good to see you back and posting again. Sure miss you for these few weeks. Welcome back and thank you for sharing. Gia.
Hi Lily, hope your mom condition improves soon.
The good old days of fish frying without teflon wok....but it seems to taste better in those days!
Hi Lily,
Hope your mom will get well soon. Childhood dishes are the best even when they are meager.

Simple way to prepare fish but sometimes simple is good! I am glad you are having a good time connecting with family and I am sorry to hear about your mom. Will be remembering her in my prayers.
Lily, hope ur mom will get well soon.
Hi Lily
Sometimes the simple things in life makes us cheerish and remember fondly of the days gone by.
Whether it is 'suk yee', cincalok with sliced shallots and chilli or sambal belacan with limau kasturi, we just tucked in with glee.
Oh Lily, I will pray that your mum gets well soon! You take care.
Hi Lily ,
Think positive and stay strong.
I hope you find solace in God.
Jess
Note : I've been reading your blog as a silent reader.
Hope your mum feels better soon. God blessed. Good to see you back.
Sometime the simplest food brought back the most memorable moments in your heart. I have recently written about food that were memorable to me when I was a kid.
Fried fish with soy is tasty especially fish caught on the day. I remembered we had cheap tiny fish (some people called them fish for the cat!), fried till crispy, eaten with soy and chilli. It's cheap but who cares they're yummy.
I hope your mom will get well soon, God bless her!
This is also the way how my mom use to cook for us when I was a kid, now my kids also like this way too!
hope your mom gets well soon ...
Sorry to hear about your mom not being well. Will include her in our prayers for a speedy recovery. My mom used to cook this fried fish for us too. She would then use a little bit of the oil, mix it with some black and white soy sauce, sometimes with a little sliced chillies and we would have it with rice. It actually smells and tastes good! My mom really makes the tastiest food with limited resources too! Mothers are really the best gems in the universe!
So sorry to hear your Mom is unwell. It is always sad to see a family member being unwell. Hope she get well soon.
Marvelleous blog with amazing food!
Babe u know I love your blog..But this dish you really need to work on the presentation...
My mom did it this way too.
But with some ginger.
Our favourite is the oil and soy below the fish
Lily, I wish your mum a speedy recovery.

I have never had fish this way. So simple but delicious.
Oh...Lily, so sorry to hear your mom's not well. I'm glad that she is in good hands and will recover soon. Love your fish with soya sauce. That's how we ate too when we were young cos we didn't have much. It was very delicious with rice. With 6 children we had to eat lots of rice to stay full.
Lily, hope your mum feels better soon.

Aunty Lily, With prayers and warm thoughts your mom is in great care and her pain lessens day by day.
what a wonderful self-less woman, she'll be very happy to know that her daughter is like her.
thanks for all the yummy recipes
There is a secret to fry the fish well with it's skin still on is to sieve some flour or rice flour on them before you fry !! Slice some spring onions, ginger if you have to very fine and pour some boiling hot oil onto the spring onions, then pour some think Soya sauce onto the fish. My, my, it will be the best fried fish just like you ate in restaurant!!
rebecca
thanks
